The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history: the Minoan eruption (also called the Thera eruption) which occurred some 3600 years ago during the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption created a large caldera surrounded by layered deposits of tephra hundreds of meters deep and probably indirectly caused the downfall of the Minoan civilization on Crete, 110 km to the south, through a massive tsunami. Another popular theory is that the eruption of Thera gave rise to the legend of Atlantis. Overnight stay.
